EXPLORING JAKARTA



Jakarta is one of expanding city in Indonesia. As the Capital City, Jakarta is a melting pot of representatives from each of these ethnic groups. Jakarta is uniquely the seat of both the national as well as the regional goverment. Finding its origin in the small early 16th century harbor town of Sunda Kelapa, Jakarta's founding is thought to have taken place on June 22, 1527. Jakarta has many varities of culture, tribe, exciting tourism place and life-style.

The most ethnic of Jakarta named Betawi. The Betawi (Orang Betawi, or "people of Batavia") is a term used to describe the descendants of the people living around Batavia and recognized as a tribe from around the 18th-19th century. The Betawi people are mostly descended from various Southeast Asian ethnic groups brought or attracted to Batavia to meet labor needs, and include people from various parts of Indonesia. The language and culture of these immigrants are distinct from those of the Sundanese or Javanese. The language is more based on East Malay dialect and enriched by loan words from Javanese, Chinese, and Arab.

Nowadays, the Jakarta-dialects used by people in Jakarta is loosely based on Betawi Language. Betawi has variety of music, dance and theatre, Wayang Kulit Betawi and Lenong are examples of this influence. Jakarta has many Betawi arts, such as Gambang Kromong or The Tanjidor orchestra. The Gambang Kromong and Cokek dance originated in the residence of wealthy Chinese traders and merchants. The Betawi Cokek dance shows Balinese influence in the movement of the dancers and the style of playing the gamelan. This style of playing the gamelan can also be observed in the gamelan orchestra accompanying the Wayang Kulit Betawi show. A major influence on the Betawi culture is Islam, the religion of the majority of the people. The Rebana orchestra, the Marawis performance, the Gambus orchestra, the Zapin or Japin dance are Islam inspired art forms. This style of playing the gamelan can also be observed in the gamelan orchestra accompanying the Wayang Kulit Betawi show. And it’s also fame with its songs, likes Sirih Kuning and Kicir kicir. Actually, the Betawi arts are rarely found in Jakarta due to their infamous low-profile and most of them had moved to the border of Jakarta, ridden by the wave of immigrant. However, some festivals such as Jalan Jaksa Festival or Kemang Festival tried to preserve the Betawi art by inviting the artist to do some performances.

As in the case with other groups, the Betawi group has its specific dress for man and woman. Man's Costume is thight - length coat with normal trousers, Slip - on shoes, Traditional Betawi headgear, special belt, called lokcan, dagger slipped in the belt, watch chain with a tiger claw attached. And for Woman's dress is long Kebaya with buttened cuffs, sarong with the lasem motif, Pointed sandals with low heels, hair - piece of the cepol type, veil matching the kebaya, heavy gold or silver belt, and three - teir brooch to fasten the kebaya.

Jakarta has moved from a Hero to be a Super Hero which has predicate as metropolitan centers In Indonesia. With a current population more than 10 million, Jakarta has undergone dramatic growth. Today, Jakarta's skyline is covered by modern background. The many state-of-the-art shopping centers, recreation complexes and toll-roads have become hallmarks of the city. The quality of life and the general welfare of its inhabitants have improved considerably with the city's fast pace of development. Jakarta's cultural richness and dynamic growth contribute significantly to its growing importance as one of the world's leading capital cities.

Jakarta is one of tourism with some excitement things. It is a chance to other tourist destinations in Indonesia and is equipped with all the means of modern transportation by air, sea, rail, or by land. Jakarta, once considered as primarily a stop-over to more worthwhile destinations in the country, has become a major destinations in its own right. Visitors come for Jakarta'' complete facilities and attractions that are in many ways unique and not available elsewhere. In the field of tourism Jakarta offers four and five star hotels with similar establishments elsewhere in the world, convention facilities, luxury hotels, fine restaurant, amusement parks, shopping centers, historical buildings, museums, tours, and many other tourist attractions.

It contains many tourist attractions such as Taman Mini Indonesia Indah restored colonial period buildings, island resorts in the Pulau Seribu (Thousand Island), and an extensive beach recreation complex called Ancol. "Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park" popularly called TMII "Taman Mini Indonesia Indah", built to portray the variety of cultures found within the many islands contained in the Republic of Indonesia, this open-air museum comprises the many architectural forms of arts and traditions of all Indonesia provinces. Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, most people called it Ancol, has many interesting facilities, such as Dufan or Dunia Fantasi which is belong to modern tourism, Carnaval Beach, Outbondholic Ancol for people who loved extreme stunts, Sea World as place which has view likes a Real Sea and fullfilled by many kinds of Fishes and Underwater-Life, Atlantis, and Gelanggang Samudra. Jakarta also has educational tourism likes Planetarium. It also has historical buildings such as Fatahillah Museum which is called Old Town, Monas or Monumen Nasional, a monument which fame with historical things, Pancasila Sakti Museum or called Lubang Buaya, and many others of fine Historical Bulding in Jakarta. Jakarta also has The Zoo, and the famous one is Ragunan Zoo. Ragunan zoo in South Jakarta is a popular place to visit, particularly during holidays. Jakarta's zoo is situated in the suburb of Ragunan in the southern part of the city. Laid out in a lush tropical setting, such indigenous animals. It's a world-class facility and guaranteed to entertain and educate people.

Jakarta is a gastronomic paradise for culinary and has a variety of restaurants to choose from Indonesian, European, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Thai culinary treats are all available in many different locations around the city. A cafe where you can relax and enjoy the delectable menu which uses a range of indigenous herbs and spices. For visitor's convenience here follows a list of restaurants and event stalls, where they can dine and take their time. Maybe some people in Jakarta have known about typical food in Jakarta and there are some people which haven’t know about it well. It can be guaranteed that most people in Jakarta only know that Kerak Telor is one of typical food in Jakarta. Originally, Jakarta has many typical foods, there are Bir Pletok (kind of drink made from ginger), Kue Satu (kind of cookies made from green beans), Kue Wajik (the taste is very sweet and sticky), Roti Buaya (kind of big bread looks like crocodile), Ketupat Sayur Betawi, Tape Uli and Tape Ketan. About the Taste? Its so delicious than the other foods.

We go to Shopping World in Jakarta. Shopping world in Jakarta is the greater and colorful. All of Jakarta area has their own shopping centre icon and characteristic. When planning a trip to Jakarta, consider spending a day at one of the many modern shopping malls the city has to offer. You may welcome a day off from tourist and cultural sites and enjoy spending time in air-conditioned comfort, where you can relax and shop without annoying hawkers. Often, due to special sales or discounts, international fashions may actually be cheaper in Jakarta than in other fashion centers.

Shopping Centers in Jakarta are also takes the race in providing their self with many more entertainment for the costumers. From cinemas, ice skating arena, up to game station. You don’t need to feel confuse to eat because, many food courts and restaurants are ready to serve. If you just want to hang out, just go to the café and bar. They sure will make your days more colorful and happy.

Nevertheless, Jakarta also spoils you with conventional shopping rules, with bargaining. For this, just choose some Tanah Abang, Pasar Senen and Pasar Rawa Belong. We can enjoy Indonesia’s heritage while shopping from accent language and culture from the seller. We can also enjoy the goods which are unique and interesting. With touch of modern esthetic, some traditional markets are dressed-up so that they no longer look dark and untidy. Beyond the malls, there are many streets that used to be the "downtown" areas of the old neighborhoods. The blok M area, for example, easily reachable from anywhere because it is the location of one of Jakarta's public transportation hub, has many stores to satisfy your shopping desire.

Keep better of Jakarta is a must, therefore we as Jakarta’s people must pay attention to the Jakarta and preserve the Culture of Jakarta. Don’t let the Jakarta going to be Foreign City which doesn’t take good attitude as capital city of Indonesia. Be proud as the Jakarta’s People. Keep the good name of Jakarta as one of good personality of city in Indonesia because it contains much of best experiences.
